About The Product:
World-renown for its top of the line musical instruments, Roland V drums are among the most popular.  But they can be quite pricey, so for the budget conscious or for those who cannot afford the full V-drum set-up, the Roland HD-1 is a welcome addition. Patterned using the same technology that goes into every Roland drum, the HD-1 is easier and simpler to use. In fact, you just have to take it out of the box and start drumming.

The overall design is quite compact so the whole set-up might look small, but HD-1 sound and performance outputs are definitely impressive. So its no surprise that the HD-1 V-Drums Lite received the iF product design award for 2009.

The HD-1 has a newly designed kick beater, cushioned tom pads and a snare head.  Its unbelievable quiet, too, so for someone with basic V-drum know how, the HD-1 Kit is a dream. Its got volume control level which can be adjusted with a volume knob or with the headphones. The HD-1 also comes with an external input for hooking up CD players or iPods so you can jam and play with a complete line-up of instruments.

Our Verdict:

A V-Drum line is essentially a premium series, so the Roland HD-1 at less than a thousand dollars is quite an affordable entry-level electronic drum set-up. The HD-1 supposedly targets two different user groups, first time users and the drum hobbyists who want the convenience that an electronic set provides over an acoustic type.  The Roland HD-1 is sleek and compact, and surprisingly delivers superb sound quality, performance and features balanced with a well-engineered and solid design. Once you get your hands on the Roland HD-1, everything falls easily into place so you can concentrate on accuracy with closely slotted components. Its a great choice for starters and enthusiasts who want a MIDI-capable (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) drum kit that doesnt take up a lot of space.

Customer Feedback-

"A quality set that fits anywhere. Awesome for practicing and decent for small gigs/jamming. Very responsive and sensitive. The different sets included are decent, nothing too exotic, but still very entertaining and great sound quality. I got it for my dorm room and I have never regretted it, and plugging in headphones means practicing all night long... perfect for a drummer with limited space.

"I bought this kit to replace the crappy "other brand" kit I had for only one month (you get what you pay for). I am extremely pleased with its features, easy set up, and overall value. Practice time is valuable, so when the wife is sick of hearing my feeble Neil Peart impression, I plug the headphones into this thing. Perfect."

"I've had my HD-1 for 48 hours, and I've probably spent 8 to 10 hours playing them. First the good: I'm short on space and the HD-1 is very compact. You can get some decent sounds out of the snare drum. Rim shots are easy and sound OK. The bad: Very limited adjustment options for drum heads and cymbals. You can't do much to change the angles or tilt, and for me not being able to tilt the snare drum is a big annoyance."

"
This kit is near-to-perfect for someone who finds their acoustic kit has become too loud, too big, too difficult to transport, and too time-consuming to set up. If you are looking for something that is small with a small footprint that is light, portable, and that sounds good, this kit will fill the bill."
